PHOENIX - Nolan Arenado answered a three-homer Yankees inning with the loudest swing of Arizona's afternoon.
He finished 1-for-4 with a fifth-inning grand slam and four RBI as the Diamondbacks beat New York 8-4 on Sunday at Chase Field, ESPN's box shows. The slam was Arenado's third of the season, tying Houston's Yordan Alvarez for the major league lead, and the ninth of his career, the Associated Press reported.
New York had taken a 4-1 lead in the third when Heliot Ramos, George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones all homered off Corbin Burnes. Arizona loaded the bases against Will Warren in the fifth before Brent Headrick entered, struck out Geraldo Perdomo for the second out, then walked Corbin Carroll to force in a run.
Arenado homered on a 2-1 pitch for a 6-4 lead, per the AP. ESPN's box matches the 1-for-4, four-RBI, one-homer line.
Slam, then the bullpen
Justin Martinez earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief, and four other Arizona relievers helped limit the Yankees to three hits over the final 6 1/3 innings after Burnes exited, the AP noted. Perdomo added an RBI single in the first and an RBI triple in the seventh.
Gabriel Moreno, Lars Nootbaar and Ketel Marte each had two hits as the Diamondbacks finished with 11.
The win was Arizona's MLB-best 47th comeback of the season. The club kept pace in the National League wild-card chase but remained four games behind Philadelphia with six to play, per the AP. Arenado's slam turned a deficit into the lead that the bullpen protected after Burnes' short start left the game in limbo.
Carroll's walk forced in the tying run before Arenado's slam, so the fifth inning produced five Arizona runs in total once the bases were already full. That half-inning flipped a series finale that had briefly belonged to New York's power display.
