PHOENIX - Nolan Arenado waited out the jam, took a 2-1 pitch from Brent Headrick, and turned a tied September afternoon into a Diamondbacks lead that held up.
Arenado went 1-for-4 with a home run and four RBI Sunday as Arizona beat the New York Yankees 8-4 at Chase Field.
The swing was a grand slam in the fifth - his third slam of the season and ninth of his career, tying Houston's Yordan Alvarez for the major league lead in grand slams this year, according to the Associated Press recap carried by ESPN. ESPN's box lists the blast at 381 feet to left and credits Arenado with four RBI on the day.
How the bases filled
Arizona already led 1-0 on Geraldo Perdomo's first-inning RBI single when the Yankees erupted for four runs in the third on home runs by Heliot Ramos, George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones off Corbin Burnes, the AP reported. The Diamondbacks answered in the fifth after that brief deficit.
Ketel Marte singled and Gabriel Moreno walked against Will Warren before Headrick entered with traffic on. Headrick struck out Perdomo for the second out, then walked Corbin Carroll to force in a run. Arenado followed by clearing the bases - Marte, Moreno and Carroll scoring ahead of him - for a 6-4 Arizona lead after the walk had cut the Yankees' advantage to two.
Justin Martinez earned the win in relief (3-0). Headrick took the loss (7-4). Five Arizona relievers combined to hold New York to three hits over the final 6 1/3 innings, per the AP, after Burnes had lasted only 2 2/3.
