The Arizona Diamondbacks open a nine-game homestand Friday at Chase Field half a game out of the National League's final wild-card berth, with All-Star outfielder Corbin Carroll expected back in the lineup after an MRI showed no significant lower-back issues.
Arizona sits 78-69 entering the weekend, trailing the San Diego Padres (78-68) by that half-game margin for the third and last NL wild-card spot, Field Level Media reported via CBS Sports on Friday.
The series against the Texas Rangers is the first of three at home before Miami and the New York Yankees arrive later in the stand - a stretch that could decide whether the Diamondbacks control their October fate or need help elsewhere.
Carroll's return arrives at a premium moment
Carroll missed Arizona's last two games at Kansas City after a late scratch Tuesday with lower-back discomfort. Burn City Sports, citing Arizona Sports' John Gambadoro, reported Thursday that imaging found nothing concerning and that Carroll would be in Friday's lineup against Texas.
The timing matters. Carroll has been ice-cold at the plate - 5-for-44 (.114) with one homer and three RBIs over his past 12 games - yet his season line still carries weight: .240/.334/.466, a major-league-high 16 triples, 19 home runs and 61 RBIs.
Even in a slump, his speed and outfield range give manager Torey Lovullo a different set of options than the club had without him on the road.
Offense must convert again
Arizona's recent run production has lagged far behind its season norm. The Diamondbacks have averaged 2.5 runs over their past 10 games against a 4.4 season mark, per Field Level Media. A four-game winning streak ended Wednesday in a 5-2 loss at Kansas City, a frustrating close to a road trip Lovullo said the club played well enough to win four times.
"Overall, I feel like the offense is trending in the right direction, but we have to find a way to score more runs," Lovullo said. "It was a frustrating end to the (six-game) road trip, but we played well enough to win four games. We have to capitalize on the things we did well and build on it."
Context still favors Arizona's second-half surge. Since July 9 the Diamondbacks are 33-22, tied with the Milwaukee Brewers for the best National League record in that span. That foundation is why a half-game deficit feels urgent rather than fatal - provided Friday's lineup can turn contact into runs again at Chase Field.
Kelly vs. Rocker sets the tone
Merrill Kelly (9-13, 5.06 ERA) draws the Friday start opposite Texas right-hander Kumar Rocker (5-11, 4.61). Kelly, who spent time with both organizations last season, is 1-0 with a 3.09 ERA in two career starts against the Rangers. He has quality starts in his last two outings against San Francisco and Houston after a rough August (1-5, 5.63 ERA since the calendar flipped).
