Gabriel Moreno singled home the first run, finished with three hits, and kept Arizona inside the National League wild-card picture on a night the Diamondbacks needed every one of those contributions.
The Associated Press, via CBS Sports, reported that Moreno drove in the first run and went 3-for-4 as Arizona beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3 on Wednesday night at Coors Field.
Corbin Carroll capped a four-run first with a two-run triple - his major-league-leading 17th - and Merrill Kelly worked 5 1/3 innings for the win as the Diamondbacks (84-74) moved within three games of the Phillies and Cubs for a wild-card berth.
First-inning RBI, three hits, batting-title watch
Ketel Marte reached second when Zac Veen misplayed a liner in left, and Moreno singled two pitches later off Mason Adams for the lead, the AP reported. Nolan Arenado added an RBI single before Carroll's triple scored two more.
Moreno was later caught stealing, but his bat stayed in the game: ESPN's box listed him 3-for-4 with one RBI and a .310 average that trails Philadelphia's Luis Arraez at .312 with four games left, per the AP.
Adams (0-2) retired 13 straight after Carroll's triple until Moreno singled to lead off the sixth. All four runs charged to Adams were unearned. He struck out eight over six innings. Tim Tawa's solo homer in the eighth off Mark Manfredi made it 5-2 before Ezequiel Tovar answered with a solo shot in the bottom half.
Kelly (10-14) allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk over 5 1/3 innings and improved to 6-0 in nine starts at Coors Field since 2022, the AP noted. Jonathan Loaisiga earned his second save by retiring Tovar on a foul pop that Ildemaro Vargas caught at the railing with runners on second and third.
