Nolan Arenado reached 30 home runs Friday night in San Diego, and the Diamondbacks kept their thin postseason math alive with an 11-4 win over the Padres at Petco Park.
The Associated Press reported that Arenado was one of three Arizona players to go deep, joining Lars Nootbaar and Jordan Lawlar, as the Diamondbacks denied San Diego a chance to lock up the No. 4 seed and home-field advantage for next week's wild-card round. Per the CBS Sports box, Arenado finished 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and his 30th homer.
Milestone swing in a six-run cushion
Arizona jumped ahead early. Nootbaar led off the game with a home run on Casey Mize's first pitch. Geraldo Perdomo tripled home a run, and Corbin Carroll's sacrifice fly made it 3-0. Lawlar added a solo shot in the second for a 4-0 lead before San Diego answered with two in the bottom half.
Arenado's piece came with two outs in the third. After Perdomo walked, Arenado drove a two-run homer off the third level of the Western Metal Supply Co. brick warehouse in the left-field corner, the AP wrote, pushing the lead to 6-2. That was his 30th of the year and the swing that turned a competitive start into a cushion Brandon Pfaadt could manage.
Gabriel Moreno's RBI single in the fourth made it 7-2. Perdomo cleared the bases with a three-run double in the sixth after walks loaded them, and Arizona added one more in the seventh for the 11-4 final. Perdomo finished with four RBI on the night, the AP noted, while Arenado's two-run homer remained the middle-of-the-order milestone inside the outburst.
Wild-card math after Petco
Pfaadt (8-3) earned the win with 7 2/3 innings, nine hits, four runs, two walks, and seven strikeouts - his third win this season against San Diego, per the AP. Mize (6-10) took the loss after allowing seven runs and three home runs in four innings.
