Perdomo's four RBIs power Diamondbacks past Padres 11-4

Geraldo Perdomo did not wait for the late innings to decide Arizona's night at Petco Park. The Diamondbacks shortstop tripled home a run in the first, walked ahead of Nolan Arenado's two-run homer in the third, and cleared the bases with a sixth-inning double, finishing with four RBIs in an 11-4 win over the San Diego Padres on Friday.

The Associated Press credited Perdomo with driving in four and noted Arizona remained alive for the National League's final wild-card berth. Per the CBS Sports box score, Perdomo went 2-for-3 with two runs, two walks, a double and a triple. ESPN's box matches that line. Brandon Pfaadt (8-3) earned the win with 7 2/3 innings.

First-inning triple sets the tone

Lars Nootbaar led off the game with a first-pitch home run off Casey Mize (6-10), the AP reported. Gabriel Moreno singled, Perdomo tripled him home, and Corbin Carroll's sacrifice fly made it 3-0 before San Diego had recorded an out in the bottom half.

That early extra-base hit was the night's template. Perdomo kept reaching base and kept producing with runners on. Jordan Lawlar's solo homer in the second and Arenado's two-run drive in the third - Arenado's 30th of the season, off the Western Metal Supply Co. warehouse - stretched the lead to 6-2. Moreno's RBI single in the fourth pushed Arizona to 7-2.

Bases-clearing double in the sixth

Kyle Hart walked the bases loaded in the sixth, and Perdomo doubled to deep center, a ball that glanced off Jackson Merrill's glove and then the padded fence, the AP noted. Three runs scored. Arizona led 10-2.

Perdomo's night now ran through every scoring inning that mattered: the first-inning triple, the third-inning walk that preceded Arenado's blast, and the sixth-inning double that ended any lingering doubt.

Pfaadt allowed four runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. San Diego scored twice in the second and added single runs in the seventh and eighth, but never closed the gap Perdomo had helped open.

Padres center fielder Jase Bowen robbed Perdomo of a home run to end the eighth, the AP reported - a footnote that only underscored how often Perdomo was still swinging with impact late.

Wild-card math that still has room

Arizona moved to 86-74 and sat one game behind Philadelphia for the third wild-card spot with two games left, the AP noted, after the Cubs were swept by Boston and the Phillies lost to Tampa Bay. San Diego, already in the playoffs, was denied a chance to lock the No. 4 seed and home-field advantage in the wild-card round.

Arizona was still sorting Saturday's starter after placing Corbin Burnes on the injured list with shoulder inflammation, according to the AP. The Padres planned to start Walker Buehler. Whatever that pitching matchup becomes, Friday already belonged to the shortstop who produced from both sides of the extra-base spectrum.

Four RBIs on a triple and a bases-clearing double is the cleanest way to describe Perdomo's evening, but the walks and the runs scored matter too. He was on base for Arenado's warehouse shot. He was at the plate when Hart lost the strike zone.

He was still a threat in the eighth when Bowen climbed the wall. For a Diamondbacks club that needed every win to keep October open, that kind of complete night at shortstop is what keeping pace looks like when the schedule is almost gone.
