Gausman’s Sharp Outing Anchors Victory

Chicago Cubs pitcher Kevin Gausman delivered a masterful performance, striking out six batters and allowing just three hits over seven innings of scoreless work. His outing was the cornerstone of the team’s 7-0 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Gausman maintained control throughout his start, issuing only one walk while keeping the Diamondbacks' potent lineup off balance. He departed with a clean slate, having not allowed an earned run to cross the plate. The win improved his season record to 7-11.

Cubs Offense Explodes in Late Innings

While the pitching staff held firm, the Chicago offense found its rhythm in the middle frames. The scoring began in the second inning when Willson Contreras drove a run home via a single play involving a triple by Isaac Paredes, who scored on the play to make it 1-0.

The lead extended in the fifth inning when Nico Hoerner doubled to left field, allowing Anthony Volpe to score and push the margin to 2-0.

A decisive burst occurred in the sixth inning. Pete Crow-Armstrong homered to right-center field, measuring 431 feet. The blast cleared the bases, scoring two runs and extending the lead to 4-0. Shortly after, Michael Busch added another long ball, a 392-foot shot to left field that provided a solo run, making the score 5-0.

The Cubs continued their offensive pressure in the seventh. Anthony Rizzo doubled to right, bringing home Seiya Suzuki for a 6-0 advantage. The final run came when Ian Happ hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Bregman to cross the plate and secure the 7-0 win.

Relief Pitching Completes Shutout

The Cubs bullpen closed out the game with efficiency. Ryan Zeferjahn pitched one perfect inning, retiring the side in order with no hits or walks allowed. Caleb Thielbar followed, working a scoreless frame despite allowing two hits, ensuring the Diamondbacks could not threaten.

For Arizona, Merrill Kelly took the loss after struggling to contain the Cubs' bats. He pitched 5 and two-thirds innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs while striking out four batters. His record fell to 8-12.

Relievers Taylor Clarke and Drey Jameson also gave up runs in a short outing before Juan Burgos entered to pitch the final inning without allowing any additional damage. The Diamondbacks finished with zero total runs for the game, dropping their record to 69-63, while the Cubs improved to 76-56.

The game drew an attendance of 28,704 fans to Chase Field on Tuesday.
