Machado sets the pace
Four RBIs from Machado powered the San Diego Padres to a 9-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Chase Field.
San Diego built its lead immediately. In the top of the first inning, Machado doubled to left, scoring Tatis Jr. Merrill followed with a single to right that brought in Machado, and Bogaerts singled to center to score Merrill, giving the Padres a 3-0 lead.
The Padres added three more runs in the top of the second. Machado singled to right, scoring Bowen and Tatis Jr. and moving Rengifo to third. Merrill then singled to right, scoring Rengifo and moving Machado to third for a 6-0 San Diego lead.
Vasquez protects the advantage
Randy Vasquez earned the win for San Diego, improving to 7-6. He pitched 6.0 innings, allowed two hits and no earned runs, walked one and struck out one.
Eduardo Rodriguez took the loss for Arizona, falling to 10-4. He worked 5.2 innings and allowed 11 hits and five earned runs, with no walks and four strikeouts.
San Diego added another run in the top of the sixth. Machado singled to center, scoring Rengifo, and the Padres led 7-0.
Diamondbacks answer with two homers
The Padres pushed the lead to 8-0 in the top of the seventh when Fermin doubled to center, scoring Merrill and moving Song to third.
Arizona scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the seventh on two home runs. Arenado hit a 400-foot homer to left center, scoring Barrosa. McCann followed later with a 395-foot homer to left center, scoring Tawa and cutting San Diego’s lead to 8-4.
German Marquez allowed four hits and four earned runs in 1.0 inning for San Diego, with one walk and one strikeout. Bradgley Rodriguez pitched 1.0 inning with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and one strikeout. Griffin Canning pitched 1.0 inning with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and no strikeouts.
Padres close it out
San Diego scored the final run in the top of the ninth when Cronenworth singled to right, scoring Song and moving Fermin to third.
For Arizona, Ryan Thompson allowed three hits and one earned run in 0.1 inning. Paul Sewald and Gerardo Carrillo each pitched 1.0 inning with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and one strikeout. Jonathan Loaisiga allowed two hits and one earned run in 1.0 inning.
The announced attendance was 20,839. Arizona fell to 60-54, while San Diego improved to 59-55.
