Queen Creek is actively opposing a U.S. Postal Service initiative that would alter its ZIP code, a change officials and residents argue will erase the community's geographic identity. The postal service plans to shift ZIP codes beginning with 852 to 851 on July 1 to accommodate regional growth and consolidate similar codes.
For Queen Creek, this means the sole ZIP code within its town limits, 85242, would become 85142.
The proposed change would effectively group Queen Creek with 29 other ZIP codes in Pinal County. While the town falls mostly within Maricopa County, a small portion extends into Pinal. Town Manager John Kross noted that the only current ZIP code in Queen Creek is the only one mostly in Maricopa County slated for this transition.
Kross stated that a recent meeting with postal officials was not productive, though the town intends to raise the issue at the highest possible levels if the decision stands.
Mayor Art Sanders has written to Arizona’s congressional delegation, including Rep. Jeff Flake and Sens. Jon Kyl and John McCain, urging them to intervene. Sanders argued that while postal codes are administrative tools, the public perception of residency status is critical.
He described using the county line to determine the change as a reasonable request, noting that Queen Creek is the only Maricopa County town facing this specific shift.
