Gilbert Fire and Rescue confirmed the passing of retired Captain David Tavares, who died from occupational cancer. The department shared the news with the community, noting his long struggle with the illness.

Tavares dedicated 22 years to the fire service, with 19 of those years spent specifically with Gilbert Fire and Rescue. He retired from his position as a captain in April 2023. His career included service as a member of the Gilbert Honor Guard and time in the United States Marine Corps.

In a statement regarding his death, the department described Tavares as one of the most reliable and hard-working members of the team. Officials expressed that he will be deeply missed by colleagues and extended their thoughts to his wife, children, and other loved ones during this period.

Gilbert is located approximately 11 miles northwest of Queen Creek.
