Matthew Mayich, a defenseman for Arizona State University and a draft pick of the St. Louis Blues, is currently hospitalized after collapsing during an outdoor workout last Thursday. Paramedics reported that he suffered from a heat-related illness.
The university is conducting an investigation into the incident. Doug Armstrong, the president of hockey operations for the Blues, expressed the organization's support for Mayich, stating, "The entire Blues organization is keeping Matthew Mayich close to our hearts as we pray for his comfort and recovery while he continues to undergo medical treatment in Arizona."
Armstrong noted that Mayich's agent has been providing updates on his medical status. The Blues selected Mayich in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft; however, he did not sign an entry-level contract. Prior to joining Arizona State, Mayich played four seasons with the Ottawa 67’s in the Ontario Hockey League and spent the last season at Clarkson University.
Mayich transferred to Arizona State for the upcoming season, but further details regarding his condition have not yet been released.
