Arizona State University hockey officials faced repeated questions about Matthew Mayich’s collapse during an August practice, but declined to discuss the player’s condition or the investigations connected to the incident during a media session about the upcoming season.
The session opened with officials saying those topics were outside the event’s scope. Head coach Greg Powers said the situation has been difficult for the team, and that Mayich and his family remained in his thoughts and prayers. He also said counseling services were available to teammates and staff.
Powers acknowledged a report released Wednesday by ASU senior vice president of educational outreach and student services Michael Crow, along with an ongoing investigation by ASU police. He did not provide additional information. Michael Weisman, associate commissioner of the NCHC and moderator of the event, again told reporters that questions about the investigation would not be answered.
Reporters continued to ask about the workout connected to Mayich’s collapse on Aug. 20. When asked whether he held himself responsible, Powers responded, “Respectfully, I decline to answer any questions regarding August 20.” Follow-up questions about the report’s findings also received no answer.
Powers was later asked whether he believed he remained the right person to lead the program. He said he respected other people’s opinions but was confident in his position, citing his time at the university and accomplishments beyond hockey.
