Blake Gillikin, punter for the Arizona Cardinals, is making a comeback after a challenging season that saw him undergo back surgery and miss the last 12 games.
Reflecting on his injury, Gillikin noted, "This was really my first significant back injury in my career," but he expressed confidence in his recovery, stating that the issue is now resolved thanks to a skilled surgeon in Los Angeles.
During the preseason, Gillikin has had limited opportunities due to the efficiency of the Cardinals' offense, averaging 52.7 yards on three punts, with two landing inside the 20-yard line. His performance included a notable punt in the Hall of Fame game that pinned the Panthers at their 3-yard line.
Gillikin acknowledged that adjusting to punting indoors during training camp took some time, but he feels prepared as he returns to the field.
The Cardinals are set to host the Dallas Cowboys in their only home preseason game, with 13 of their 17 regular-season games scheduled to be played indoors. Special teams coordinator Michael Ghobrial emphasized the advantages of a controlled environment, stating that it allows for more precise kick locations.
He noted the importance of being focused, as special teams only have one chance to execute plays correctly.
