Queen Creek, Arizona — A federal judge ruled that federal agencies cannot use a change in administrative priorities by itself to terminate grants after they have been awarded, according to Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, whose office joined a multistate coalition in the case.
The decision came from U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani in Massachusetts. The case concerned federal funding that states said was put at risk when agencies relied on a regulation referring to grants that no longer further agency priorities.
Mayes said the ruling protects funding supporting programs such as clean water, medical research, education, public health and food assistance. The coalition included representatives from 24 states and territories.
