Ildemaro Vargas turned a 3-2 deficit into a 4-3 lead with one swing to the right-center wall.
The Associated Press reported that Vargas hit a go-ahead two-run triple in a four-run seventh inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied for a 5-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday at Chase Field, taking the series. ESPN's box score lists Vargas, starting at second base, at four at-bats, one run, two hits, two RBI, zero walks, and zero strikeouts.
He doubled off Andrew Abbott and tripled off Luis Mey, his fifth triple of the season. The two RBI gave him 63 on the year.
ESPN's scoring play in the seventh: Vargas tripled to center, Jordan Lawlar scored, James McCann scored, 4-3 Arizona. Corbin Carroll's sacrifice fly scored Vargas for 5-3. The AP wrote that Arizona had loaded the bases with nobody out against Abbott, that Lars Nootbaar made it 3-2 with a fielder's choice off Mey, and that Vargas's triple "rolled all the way to the right-center field wall."
What Vargas and Lovullo said
"This team is built for big things," Vargas said in Spanish, according to Jose M. Romero of the Arizona Republic (USA TODAY). "The most important thing is to maintain focus on the game, and get the big hit in the moment. The thing we have to do is win series, win games. We have good teams we're competing against right now."
Manager Torey Lovullo called Vargas "the heartbeat of this ball club." "Very engaged player. Plays with energy," Lovullo said.
"I think he's looked at as somebody that is leading the charge emotionally." ESPN's box charged Vargas with a fielding error. The Arizona Republic reported that he apologized to Lovullo after the game.
"There's accountability, and I like that," Lovullo said. "Overall, he's taken an opportunity and made the most of it."
How the seventh finished a series
Cincinnati led 3-0 in the third on Sal Stewart's RBI single and Eugenio Suarez's two-run single after Elly De La Cruz doubled, the AP wrote. Arizona cut it to 3-1 in the sixth on Gabriel Moreno's sacrifice fly, which scored Carroll after Carroll's triple.
