Ryan Waldschmidt was not in the game until there were two outs in the ninth.
Tim Tawa had walked with one out. Ildemaro Vargas flied to right. Pinch-runner Jose Fernandez stole second.
Waldschmidt, hitting for Jorge Barrosa, then drove a 2-1 slider from Jacob Webb over the left-field fence, 408 feet on ESPN's scoring play. The Arizona Republic wrote that Webb left the pitch over the plate and that the ball landed more than 10 rows deep. The Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Chicago Cubs 5-4 at Chase Field.
It was Waldschmidt's third homer and his second walk-off of the season. The Republic dated the first to Aug. 7 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. ESPN's box lists him 1-for-1 with two RBI, his 21st and 22nd.
"It's pretty cool, but it says a lot about the team, not just me," Waldschmidt told the Associated Press. "I just am the one who has gotten the opportunity to do it in these moments. I just think it says a lot about all of us. We're pretty resilient, we're never out of game."
Four runs down after seven
Clay Holmes had held Arizona to two singles and two walks over seven scoreless innings, striking out five. Ian Happ's three-run homer in the fourth, 397 feet, and Michael Busch's RBI single in the sixth had made it 4-0.
In the eighth, Gabriel Moreno doubled down the line off Daniel Palencia, scoring Barrosa. Geraldo Perdomo's two-run single cut it to 4-3. Webb then got Max Kepler to ground out.
Brandon Pfaadt had gone 6 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Justin Martinez (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win: 1 inning, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 strikeout.
The AP reported Arizona trailed 4-0 in the eighth before the two-out rally.
