Queen Creek, Arizona — State officials have directed federal recovery aid to shield Arizona's three public universities from recent legislative spending cuts, steering more than $16.4 million in American Rescue Plan Act reserves to preserve higher education budgets for the 2027 fiscal year.
Under the emergency distribution announced Tuesday, Arizona State University will receive roughly $8.1 million, the University of Arizona will obtain approximately $5.75 million divided between its main campus and health sciences center, and Northern Arizona University will receive about $2.62 million. The designated federal subsidies directly neutralize a 2.5 percent across-the-board reduction in operating lump-sum appropriations established during the spring legislative budget negotiations.
The state executive office stated that the federal intervention was necessary to prevent campus administrators from reducing instructional programs, student services, and workforce preparation initiatives. Executive officials also noted that earlier legislative proposals had sought annual recurring university decreases approaching $40 million alongside a $25 million reduction in research allocations before negotiations capped the final adjustment at a single-year figure.
