Lars Nootbaar swung at the first pitch of the game and sent it out for a leadoff home run.
ESPN's game log measured the drive at 432 feet to center. CBS Sports' play-by-play called the landing spot right center. Arizona led before San Francisco recorded an out Friday at Oracle Park, and Nootbaar kept hitting. He finished 3-for-4 with two runs, a double, a home run and one RBI in the Diamondbacks' 10-6 win over the Giants.
The Associated Press, in a recap on CBS Sports, credited Nootbaar with three of Arizona's 12 hits and noted the club moved a half-game behind San Diego for the third NL wild-card spot. Baseball-Reference and CBS Sports list Arizona at 72-64 and San Francisco at 55-80. The night game drew 27,153 and lasted 3:06 after a 7:15 p.m. local start.
Third-inning surge after an early exchange
Bryce Eldridge answered Nootbaar in the bottom of the first with a solo shot to right, his 15th of the season, at 381 feet per ESPN. Turner Hill's sacrifice fly scored Jung Hoo Lee in the second after Lee singled and stole second, and the Giants briefly led 2-1.
Arizona took the game back in the third. Carroll hit a two-run homer to center, measured at 419 feet by ESPN, his 19th of the year and 61st RBI. Nootbaar had doubled deep to center and scored on the swing.
Tawa followed with a three-run homer; ESPN placed it in left center at 379 feet, while CBS Sports' play-by-play said left. Perdomo and Arenado scored. Blade Tidwell took the loss after five innings, seven hits, six earned runs, four strikeouts and one walk on 100 pitches, 67 strikes, ERA 4.54.
Gerardo Carrillo earned the win with a clean fifth: one inning, no hits, one strikeout, two walks, ERA 0.55, improving to 3-1. Kohl Drake started for Arizona and lasted four innings, five earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Bivens allowed four earned runs over two innings.
Line, split averages, and what followed
After the leadoff blast, Nootbaar doubled in the third, struck out looking in the fourth, singled to right in the sixth (Vargas to third ahead of Carroll's sacrifice fly), then yielded to pinch-hitter Barrosa in the eighth. His season totals moved to five home runs, 22 RBI and 11 doubles.
Season averages diverge by outlet. ESPN lists Nootbaar at .228/.329/.358. CBS Sports' box has him at .227/.331/.360. Both boxes agree on the night's 3-for-4 line with the homer and double.
