The Queen Creek Police Department is inviting residents to lace up next Saturday for Stand and Stride, a 5K run and 1-mile walk meant to draw attention to domestic violence and support people who have lived through it.

The event runs from 7 to 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Desert Mountain Park, 22201 S. Hawes Road, according to the town's event calendar.

The department describes the morning as a way to get the community talking about an issue that often stays hidden, and to let people affected by abuse know they are not alone.

It is part of Faith & Blue, a program that pairs police departments with congregations and community groups. Local faith-based organizations and other partners will have information on hand about support services, resources and programs for individuals and families dealing with domestic violence.

Participants sign up through a registration form on the police department's Stand and Stride page on the town website. The form asks whether each person is entering the run or the walk and how many children under 18 will come along, and it includes a liability waiver and a photo release.

October is recognized nationally as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Anyone in immediate danger should call 911. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is available around the clock at 800-799-7233.
