Arenado’s Key Hit
Nolan Arenado provided the offensive spark for the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday, driving in two runs with a double to left field. His hit in the third inning turned a 0-2 deficit into a 0-4 lead, giving Arizona a crucial two-run advantage that held up through the final out at Chase Field.
The Cardinals had taken an early 2-0 lead, with Paul Goldschmidt singling to right to score Corbin Carroll in the second inning and Nick Martinez scoring on a wild pitch by Dustin May in the third. However, Arenado’s double, which also scored Ketel Marte, shifted the momentum.
Marte had already singled to left in the fourth inning to add another run, making it 5-0 before the Cardinals began their rally.
Cardinals Fight Back
St. Louis mounted a late comeback attempt in the sixth and ninth innings. In the sixth, Christian Walker singled to center to score Brendan Doyle, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed Doyle to score again, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
The Cardinals added one more run in the ninth when Will Craig homered to right center, a 443-foot shot that made the final score 5-3.
