The Chandler Police Department has established a specialized unit to monitor and respond to illegal fireworks activity during the upcoming Fourth of July weekend. Chandler is located approximately 13 miles west of Queen Creek.
Sgt. Sam Wagner stated that the department created this dedicated group to improve response times for all types of calls. By assigning specific officers to handle fireworks-related incidents, regular patrol officers remain available to manage emergency and non-emergency situations that are unrelated to fireworks in their respective areas.
The city has outlined specific restrictions on fireworks use. According to municipal regulations, the following items are prohibited: sky rockets, bottle rockets, firecrackers, reloadable shell devices, Roman candles, aerials, and single-tube devices that produce loud bangs. Individuals found violating these rules face significant fines.
Authorities emphasize that airborne fireworks pose a risk of serious injury, a concern that intensifies during holiday periods. Additionally, the department aims to prevent fires, particularly given the current dry conditions in the area. Wagner noted that police departments typically receive a high volume of calls on the night of July 4th.
To ensure emergency lines remain open for critical situations, the Chandler Police Department urges residents to report illegal fireworks via the non-emergency line. Wagner explained that 911 lines have limited capacity and must be preserved for genuine emergencies where immediate dispatch is required. Calls regarding fireworks can be addressed at any time through the non-emergency channel, helping to keep emergency services accessible for urgent needs.
