Antonette Shirley, Chandler Unified’s indigenous student engagement specialist, received the Arizona Department of Education’s Copper Apple Award for August.

Sophia Begody, deputy associate superintendent for the department’s Office of Indian Education, presented the recognition before the Chandler Unified Governing Board’s Sept. 9 meeting. Begody also read the reasons Shirley was selected.
