Arizona state Sen. Jake Hoffman, a Republican from Queen Creek, announced on Wednesday that he will issue subpoenas to Gov. Katie Hobbs and Attorney General Kris Mayes. The move is intended to compel both officials to appear before the Senate Government Committee to address questions about a 2023 state decision to increase payments to a private firm.
The company in question, Sunshine Residential, provides housing for foster children through the Department of Child Safety. Hoffman stated that the state approved a nearly 60% increase in the firm's compensation. He noted that Sunshine Residential has donated $550,000 to the governor and the Arizona Democratic Party.
Hoffman argued that the public deserves clarity on how the agency arrived at this financial arrangement, particularly after two previous agency directors determined that the additional funding was not necessary.
Sen. Mark Finchem, who was present at the press conference, also raised concerns about the deal. Hoffman said the committee seeks direct testimony from the governor and other individuals in her administration regarding the decision-making process. He also requested that the attorney general and her staff testify about their own investigation into the matter.
