The attorney representing Matthew Mayich, a 21-year-old hockey player at Arizona State, has publicly criticized the university's handling of the situation following Mayich's collapse during an off-ice workout on August 20. Since then, Mayich has been in a coma at the Neurological Institute in Phoenix.
His attorney, Rob Carey, who previously served as Arizona's Deputy Chief Attorney General, stated that Mayich is incapacitated and has little chance of recovery.
Arizona State has acknowledged that Senior Vice President James Rund is conducting an internal review of the incident. However, both the university and athletic director Graham Rossini have clarified that this is not an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mayich's collapse.
Carey has expressed dissatisfaction with this response, asserting that the university has mishandled the situation and is calling for the suspension or administrative leave of members of the coaching staff, along with an independent investigation.
In remarks to the Arizona Republic, Carey emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, "A kid's life was basically ruined, the family is devastated, and people refuse to accept responsibility." Mayich had previously played at Clarkson University, where he recorded seven goals and eight assists in 34 games.
