Late Inning Surge Decides Game
Jonathan Loaisiga secured his fourth victory of the season by pitching two scoreless innings to close out a tense matchup between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Boston Red Sox. The Diamondbacks defeated the Red Sox 7-6 in ten innings on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at Fenway Park.
The game remained tightly contested through the early frames before Arizona broke through in the fifth inning. With the score tied 0-2, Nick Castellanos doubled to left field, allowing Salvador Perez to score for a 3-2 Diamondbacks lead. Later in the same inning, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. doubled to center field, driving in two more runs to extend the advantage to 5-2.
Boston responded aggressively in the sixth inning. Rafael Devers homered to right-center field, bringing one run home and making the score 5-3. However, the Red Sox quickly added three more runs in that same frame when Alex Bregman hit a three-run home run to right-center field, tying the game at 5-5.
Extra Innings Bring Drama
The teams traded leads and ties through the middle innings, with neither side able to establish a permanent advantage. The game remained deadlocked until the top of the ten inning when Arizona capitalized on a critical moment.
Corbin Carroll reached on an infield single to shortstop, allowing Ketel Marte to score and give the Diamondbacks a 6-5 lead. On the same play, Carroll advanced to second base as Christian Walker walked, loading the bases with one out.
With the bases loaded, the Red Sox defense struggled to contain Arizona’s momentum. Walker advanced to third on a wild pitch by Boston reliever Jovani Moran, who allowed the tying run to score earlier in the inning. In the final sequence of the game, Carroll scored from second base on a sacrifice fly, extending the Diamondbacks’ lead to 7-5.
Boston managed to pull one run back in the bottom of the tenth when Alex Verdugo grounded out to third base, allowing Travis Jankowski to score, making the final score 7-6.
