A proposed data center and natural gas power generation facility, referred to as Project Eagle, is advancing in Queen Creek as the city of Glendale considers annexing the property. The development, led by Michigan-based developer Takanock, is planned for a site currently in unincorporated Maricopa County, near Litchfield Road and Olive Avenue.
The project has sparked a range of reactions from local residents. Some, like Waddell resident April Butler, have raised concerns about air quality, water usage, noise, and the facility's proximity to Luke Air Force Base. Butler expressed frustration at comments made by Glendale councilmembers suggesting the project would proceed regardless of the annexation outcome.
"How can they say that? We haven't gone through the public process yet," she said.
In contrast, other residents, such as Surprise resident Lisa Everett, support the project, emphasizing that it must adhere to existing regulations regarding noise, air quality, and lighting. Everett pointed out that the site has been zoned for industrial use longer than many homes in the area have existed, suggesting that if not this data center, another industrial project could occupy the land.
City officials have indicated that the development could bring significant economic benefits, including millions in tax revenue and job creation. Everett highlighted the importance of considering these potential economic advantages alongside environmental concerns, stating, "The reality is it's tax dollars that we're looking at."
