The Arizona Wildcats football team is preparing for the 2026 season with the return of three key veterans: tight end Tyler Powell, defensive lineman Tre Smith, and offensive lineman Tristan Bounds. All three players are expected to be ready for the season opener against Northern Arizona University on September 5.
Powell's season ended prematurely last year when he suffered a knee injury on the first offensive play against Hawaii. After undergoing surgery and extensive rehabilitation, he has received medical clearance to return. Powell expressed disappointment over his injury but has worked hard to regain his strength and confidence, stating that he no longer thinks about his knee.
Smith and Bounds also faced significant injuries in previous seasons. Smith had shoulder surgery after four games last season, while Bounds suffered an ankle injury after ten games. Both players applied for medical redshirts in the past, which allowed them to extend their eligibility into a sixth year, a result of the NCAA's new 5-for-5 eligibility rule.
During the spring, Powell, Smith, and Bounds supported each other through their recovery processes, even though they were not participating in team drills. Smith noted that he was able to practice one-on-one drills with Bounds, which helped maintain their skills. Bounds highlighted the importance of support from teammates and coaches throughout their recovery journeys, emphasizing that encouragement played a crucial role in their mental readiness.
Both Smith and Bounds have shared experiences with their position coach, Josh Oglesby, who also faced a significant injury during his college career. This connection has helped them navigate their own challenges as they prepare for the upcoming season.
