The Arizona Cardinals have activated cornerback Garrett Williams from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, allowing him to begin practicing ahead of the season. Williams, who is recovering from an Achilles tear sustained last December, aims to participate in Week 1.
Currently, two players remain on the PUP list: tight end Tip Reiman and linebacker Josh Sweat. Reiman, who suffered a severe ankle injury last season, will not be ready for the team's opening game. Head coach Mike LaFleur had previously indicated that he expected all injured players, except for Williams, to be prepared for training camp, but that has not materialized for Reiman.
LaFleur noted that Reiman's recovery is uncertain, stating, "It's hard to tell. It's just day to day. He's putting in a ton of work, as well, so that's just day to day."
As the roster cutdown date approaches on August 30, the Cardinals face a challenging decision regarding Reiman. If he is placed on the regular-season PUP reserve, he would be unable to practice for at least two weeks and could not be activated until Week 5. This option would free up a roster spot for another player initially.
LaFleur emphasized the importance of communication with the player during this process, saying, "Those are the tough decisions, and you lean on the player to speak truth as well. And we trust these guys. He's made of all the right stuff, so Tip's going to keep it real with us."
