Mesa will open a big addition to Signal Butte Park on Saturday, adding about 43 acres of trails and bike tracks to the southeast Mesa park.

A ribbon-cutting is set for 10 a.m. Nov. 7 at the park, 3355 S. Signal Butte Road, the city of Mesa said in an announcement. Professional BMX riders will ride the new pump track after the ceremony, and the bike and tot tracks open to the public that day.

What the new section adds

According to the city, the expansion includes:

  • 1.5 miles of walking trails lit with LED lights
  • three shade ramadas
  • a BMX pump track, flow trails for bikes and a tot track
  • a pedestrian bridge over a wash linking the new section to the original park

The pump track sits between the other two tracks. Its designer, Pillar Design Studios, calls it Arizona's biggest asphalt pump track, Mesa's announcement states.

The original park, open since January 2020, has a custom-built playground, a one-mile lighted walking loop and four ramadas. The new section was designed to keep the desert landscape, the city said, and both sections' walking loops will be open on Saturday.

Rules for the tracks

E-bikes, e-scooters, other motorized vehicles and remote-control cars are banned from the bike tracks, the city said.

The project was paid for with general obligation bond money Mesa voters approved in 2018. Vice Mayor Scott Somers, whose district covers southeast Mesa, said in the announcement that the area needs more places to get outside as it grows.

Saturday is also a busy day for the neighborhood: Mesa plans an open house from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at its new Fire Station 224, 3441 S. 80th St. north of Elliot Road, following a 1 p.m. hose-uncoupling ceremony
