Outfielder Corbin Carroll and left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez were named the Arizona Diamondbacks' two All-Star representatives on Saturday, selected for the National League squad that will compete July 14 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
Carroll earned his third All-Star selection in just his fourth full major league season, chosen by the players in their vote. The 25-year-old overcame a broken right hamate bone suffered just before spring training, undergoing surgery and returning without missing a beat, defying the conventional wisdom that power can diminish following the injury.
Rodriguez, 33, received his first career All-Star nod in his 11th major league season, selected by Major League Baseball after the fan and player voting. The left-hander called it an amazing opportunity, saying it means a lot to reach an All-Star Game after spending quite a long time in the game.
Carroll was elected to start the 2023 All-Star Game, the same season he won the National League Rookie of the Year Award. He appeared in a reserve role in last year's Midsummer Classic, playing both left and center field, and homered in that contest.
Manager Torey Lovullo praised Carroll's process and dependability, saying the outfielder is different from the typical player coming back from a hamate injury. Lovullo said Carroll willed his way through every game and proved quickly that he was ready for another strong offensive season.
