The Alliance for Scottsdale’s Future nonprofit organization is required to file campaign finance reports after failing to disclose expenses related to newspaper advertisements, according to Gilbert Town Clerk Chaveli Herrera. The ruling addresses ads that criticized four members of the Scottsdale City Council, including one incumbent currently seeking reelection.
Herrera determined that the group broke campaign finance laws by running the disparaging advertisements without reporting the associated costs. She has referred the matter to Scottsdale City Attorney Luis Santaella to enforce the ruling. Santaella stated that he is currently reviewing the case.
Lamar Whitmer, the chief executive officer of the Alliance for Scottsdale’s Future, announced that the organization intends to appeal the decision in court. The nonprofit had previously been the subject of a resident’s ethics complaint against the council members, which Gilbert officials rejected.
Gilbert is located approximately 11 miles northwest of Queen Creek.
