Salad and Go has closed every one of its restaurants, ending a 13 year run that began a few miles from Queen Creek.

The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday, Aug. 4, and served its last customers Wednesday. The closures cover all 70 drive-thru locations across Arizona and Nevada.

From Gilbert to 70 stores

Salad and Go opened its first location in Gilbert in 2013, built around a drive-thru only model selling salads and wraps at prices closer to fast food than to a salad counter. It expanded across several states from there.

That expansion had already been pulled back. In January the company closed all of its restaurants and facilities in Texas and Oklahoma and refocused on Arizona.

What the company cited

The company pointed to sustained pressure on consumer demand, difficulties from its earlier growth strategy and rising costs.

It also cited damage from a Cyclospora outbreak in July that affected the salad industry broadly. Salad and Go was not linked to that contamination.

"This is a painful day for everyone who built, worked for and loved Salad and Go," chief executive Mike Tattersfield said. "Our mission was brought to life every day by an extraordinary team and embraced by guests who made us part of their routines."

For East Valley customers

The chain was a local product, and its closure removes a drive-thru option that had few direct equivalents at the same price point.

Customers holding gift cards or app balances are affected by the bankruptcy process, in which such balances are treated as unsecured claims. The company has not published separate guidance on them.
