The Arizona Cardinals have taken a significant step towards the return of cornerback Garrett Williams, who has been activated from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Williams suffered a torn Achilles late last season and has been sidelined since the beginning of training camp.
With over three weeks remaining until the regular season, he has the opportunity to ramp up his training and potentially return for the first game, a possibility noted by head coach Mike LaFleur.
Entering the final year of his contract, Williams had a strong performance in 2024 as the team's slot corner, ranking among the best in the league. However, last season was marred by injuries; he missed six games due to a knee issue before tearing his Achilles in December after playing eight additional games.
In total, he recorded 46 tackles, five pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one interception across 10 games.
Despite his talents, Williams faced challenges in coverage last year, allowing 28 receptions and five touchdowns from 35 targets, which matched the number of passes he successfully broke up. Once he is fully healthy, he is expected to reclaim his role as the starting nickel cornerback, a position currently held by Sean Murphy-Bunting.
