The Arizona State Sun Devils are preparing for the 2026 season with ambitions of securing another Big 12 title. Head coach Kenny Dillingham is under pressure to find a suitable replacement for former quarterback Sam Leavitt, with a decision expected soon as the September 5 season opener approaches.
Chris Karpman from Sun Devil Source reported that all indications suggest Kentucky transfer Cutter Boley is the leading candidate for the starting role. Boley, who will turn 21 next week, is transitioning from SEC play to the Big 12, a move that could benefit his career despite previous struggles with ball security.
Boley faces competition from sixth-year player Mikey Keene, who has returned to Arizona after playing at three other schools. Keene is recognized for his game management skills and familiarity with the environment. While Boley has had issues with turnovers during spring camp, he is reportedly improving in fall practice and becoming more adept in Dillingham's offensive system.
The competition between Boley and Keene is described as mutually beneficial, with both players pushing each other to improve. The quarterback room has fostered a positive atmosphere, with players enjoying their competitive interactions, which is encouraging for Dillingham and the team.
Boley is expected to take on significant responsibilities as the starting quarterback, which include minimizing turnovers and effectively distributing the ball to a talented group of skill position players. Dillingham emphasizes the importance of protecting the football, as an interception rate above 3% could hinder the Sun Devils' chances at a Big 12 title.
