The Arizona Cardinals are navigating multiple injury challenges at critical positions as the NFL roster reduction deadline approaches on Aug. 30. With the season opener scheduled for two weeks after that date, the team faces uncertainty regarding the availability of key players in the backfield, tight end group, and secondary.
In the running back room, rookie Jeremiyah Love has an unknown return timeline due to a high-ankle sprain. Veteran James Conner and Trey Benson have had limited practice time, with Conner participating in only three games last season. Although Conner avoided the physically unable to perform list at the start of camp, he has not yet taken part in 11-on-11 drills.
Head coach Mike LaFleur noted that Conner is progressing and has been wearing his jersey to feel the environment, but the coaching staff does not have a specific timeline for his return to full performance.
The absence of blocking tight end Tip Reiman, who opened camp on the PUP list, presents another challenge. Reiman’s role was significant last season, and his continued absence could impact the run game. LaFleur confirmed that Reiman will not play in Week 1, describing his recovery as a process with varying levels of progress.
A decision must be made by Aug. 30 regarding whether to activate Reiman or place him on reserve, which would affect his eligibility for the early part of the season. Rookie free agent Jamison Geers was also placed on injured reserve following a thumb injury sustained against the Las Vegas Raiders.
